AI search and Generative Engine Optimization

Help AI search find, understand and cite your company

Visibility in ChatGPT, Gemini, Google AI Overviews and other AI answers depends on whether your company is easy to find, interpret and verify. The work starts with classic SEO, then adds direct answers, reliable sources, consistent facts and measurement of how the brand is represented.

Short answer

How can a company appear in AI search?

Publish clear answers to customer questions, support claims with verifiable sources, keep company facts consistent, make content technically accessible and build topical authority across relevant pages. Then monitor brand mentions, cited pages, answer accuracy and whether the traffic leads to qualified actions.

Classic SEO and AI search solve related but different tasks

Generative Engine Optimization, commonly called GEO, does not replace SEO. GEO builds on discoverability and focuses on whether a generative service can understand, select and represent information in an answer.

Classic SEO

Goal: rank a relevant page for a query.

Key signals: intent, content, links, technical quality and user experience.

Check: rankings, impressions, clicks, conversions and indexing.

AI search and GEO

Goal: become an accurate and useful source in a generated answer.

Key signals: entity clarity, direct answers, sources and citations, factual consistency, freshness and machine-readable structure.

Check: mentions, cited URLs, answer accuracy, referral traffic and next actions.

One foundation, different AI surfaces

ChatGPT

Can combine model knowledge with web search and cited sources. Pages need to be public, clear and worth referring to. Visibility can vary by question, model version and search mode.

Gemini

Can use Google's search ecosystem and other sources when forming answers. Strong indexing, clear topical relationships and verifiable facts help, but no placement can be guaranteed.

Google AI Overviews

Builds generated summaries on top of Google's search systems. Standard SEO requirements still apply. A page can be cited without being the first organic result, but relevance and quality remain central.

Other AI answers

Perplexity, Copilot and emerging vertical search services use different indexes, partners and citation patterns. Do not optimize for one bot. Build an open, verifiable information layer that multiple systems can use.

Practical sequence

Seven steps from search intent to citation readiness

  1. 1. Map questions and decisions

Collect questions asked before purchase, comparison and implementation. Cover the full decision: what the solution is, who it fits, alternatives, risks, process, cost drivers and how outcomes are assessed.

  2. 2. Give the direct answer first

Answer each page's main question early. Use descriptive headings, short definitions, lists and tables when they improve interpretation. Put depth after the answer.

  3. 3. Create a clear topic cluster

Use one pillar page to explain the topic broadly and link to existing services, guides, analysis and contact paths. Link text should explain the relationship between pages.

  4. 4. Make claims verifiable

Separate fact from opinion. State dates, methods and authors. Link to primary sources for statistics, standards and product features. Never publish client outcomes that cannot be verified and approved.

  5. 5. Stabilize the company entity

Use the same name, offer, location, people and contact details across the site and relevant external profiles. A clear About page, authorship and organization identity help systems understand who is behind the content.

  6. 6. Secure technical access

Check status codes, canonical, hreflang, robots.txt, XML sitemap, rendered HTML, mobile experience and structured data. Schema must describe visible content and must not add claims missing from the page.

  7. 7. Measure, test and update

Run a fixed set of realistic questions each month. Record whether the company appears, how it is described, which sources are cited and whether the answer is correct. Prioritize content gaps and technical errors.

What makes a page ready to be used as a source?

Citation readiness does not mean an AI service must choose the page. It means a person and a system can quickly determine what is claimed, who says it and how the information can be checked.

  • One distinct main question and a short, self-contained answer near the top.
  • Author, publication date and update date where freshness matters.
  • Primary sources close to factual claims, using descriptive link text.
  • Clear definitions, comparisons, boundaries and examples without inflated promises.
  • Consistent names for the company, services, people and locations.
  • Internal links to adjacent pages that deepen the topic and establish context.

Technical checks for AI search

Start with the same foundation as an indexable search result. If a page cannot be fetched, rendered or understood reliably, it is also a weak candidate for AI answers.

  • A 200 response for the canonical URL and no unnecessary redirect chains.
  • Self-referencing canonical with correct Swedish and English hreflang alternates.
  • robots.txt and robots metadata aligned with intended indexing.
  • An XML sitemap containing only canonical, indexable URLs.
  • Important content and internal links in server-rendered HTML, not only after client interaction.
  • Article or WebPage, BreadcrumbList and FAQPage only when matching content is visible.
  • A fast, responsive page with clear heading order and working keyboard focus.

Measure visibility without pretending GEO is exact ranking data

AI answers vary and can be personalized. One prompt or screenshot is not an outcome metric. Use a repeatable method and combine several signals.

Search baseline

Track indexing, queries, pages and clicks in Google Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools.

Prompt panel

Test the same priority questions in relevant AI services, in comparable modes and with a documented date.

Citation share

Count how often an owned URL or another correct source is used. Separate a mention from a real citation.

Answer quality

Assess whether the offer, audience, boundaries and contact path are represented correctly. Flag errors and stale facts.

Business signal

Track referral traffic, landing pages and qualified enquiries. Do not attribute more to AI search than the data supports.

Frequently asked questions about AI search and GEO

Can visibility in ChatGPT or Google AI Overviews be guaranteed?

No. Source selection and answers vary by question, model, index and time. The work can improve the conditions for being found, understood and cited, but it cannot guarantee placement.

Is GEO the same as SEO?

No, but they overlap. SEO makes pages relevant and visible in search results. GEO also emphasizes clarity, verifiability and structure that help generative systems use information in an answer.

Do we need separate copy for every AI service?

Usually not. Start with an accurate, well-structured information layer on your own website. Adapt only when a platform has a real technical requirement or the user intent differs.

Which structured data helps AI search?

Use schema that accurately describes the page, such as Article, WebPage, BreadcrumbList, Organization and FAQPage when the content is visible. Schema supports interpretation but does not guarantee citation.

How long does it take to see an effect?

It depends on the site's starting point, indexing, competition, publishing pace and how often AI services refresh sources. Set a baseline, work in measurable iterations and evaluate over time rather than promising a fixed timeline.

Want to make your website clearer to customers and AI search?

In an AI audit, we can scope the questions, content gaps and technical signals that matter most for your next practical step. The audit is a prioritization exercise, not a promise of placement or citation.
